Superior Falls & Cliffs
Superior Falls & Cliffs – Ironwood’s very own pictured rocks lakeshore!
Along the shoreline of Lake Superior are steep cliffs that rival the Upper Peninsula’s famous Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore – Superior Falls & Cliffs. The cliffs are lesser known and less visited, which makes these secluded rocks, even more awe inspiring. Next to the cliffs is a short walk to one of the area’s most impressive waterfalls, Superior Falls. Deep within the Montreal River Canyon, is a large waterfall that can be viewed from above, below, or in a kayak.
The Waterfall
The waterfall is accessible by hiking along the ridge of the falls, or in the ravine, or can be viewed by paddling from Little Girls Point. The fenced ridge is a scenic view from the top and is the safest way to view the waterfall. A difficult hike down to the shore and then along the rivers edge will allow you to get an up close view of the falls. To really feel the rushing water and get the best experience, paddle out from Little Girls Point (about 3 miles away from the east) or Saxon Harbor (about 1 mile away from the west), and enter the mouth of the river. From there, you will be able to paddle all the way up to the waterfall for a thrilling experience.
The Cliffs
Along the shore of Lake Superior are miles of cliffs, that rival the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore in Munising, Michigan. Do you want to have a more natural experience away from all of the tourists? These cliffs are more secluded, and just as awe inspiring! You can view the cliffs by a hike down to the shore (advanced) or by boat or kayak. When you visit, you will be asking yourself: “Why have i never heard of these cliffs”? Well, most locals have never heard of these cliffs either. Have the experience all to yourself!
Fishing
This area is a great location for fishing along the shore, the mouth or even in the river. Fish for some smallmouth bass, walleye, northern pike, and others, when the time is right.
Northern Lights & Sunsets
This location is arguably the best place to view the northern lights or to view the sunset. Stop down in the evening and sit along the shoreline to have a magical experience along the pristine Lake Superior shore. This is one place that you will never forget!
