Presque Isle State Park

Presque Isle State Park | Home of the Presque Isle River within the Porcupine Mountains.

This hike combines the East and West River Trails for a scenic hike along the Presque Isle River, which runs through the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park. The river has strong currents and sections of rapids, as well as three main waterfalls, Nawadaha Falls, Manido Falls, and Manabezho Falls, which measures 25 feet high.

Your hike will include sections of boardwalk, forested trail, and a suspension bridge. Soon after leaving the parking lot, you will cross over the suspension bridge to follow East River Trail. After passing Nawadaha Falls, the third waterfall, you will reach another bridge that links you to West River Trail. Follow West River Trail back to the parking lot.

Presque Isle State Park is located in the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park.  The Park is set apart as one of the major attractions of the Porkies and the entrance to the wilderness park.

The Presque Isle River is a very scenic river flowing through the Porcupine Mountains and exiting into Lake Superior.  The River is picturesque as it is surrounded by deep caverns, old growth timers, and multiple waterfalls.  This park is truly a hidden gem within the Porkies.

Camping

The Porcupine Mountains Presque Isle Campground offers 50 rustic campsites near the scenic Presque Isle River. There are vault toilets and hand pumps for water. In addition to drive-up sites, there are also 6 walk-in sites.

The campground is split into two loops. The east loop is a generator friendly side, while the west loop is generator free.

There is access trails to the nearby Presque Isle River and or to the Lake Superior shoreline. Firewood is available for purchase at the campground office.

At roughly 60,000 acres, Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park is Michigan’s largest state park. It is home to 35,000 acre old-growth forest, roaring waterfalls, miles of rivers and streams, more than 90 miles of hiking trails, the Lake Superior shoreline and vistas unrivaled anywhere in the Midwest.
