While the area does not have traditional white sandy shores, it does have unique pebble beaches along the waters of Lake Superior, perfect for relaxation, exploration, and adventure!
Little Girls Point
Just north of Ironwood, Little Girls Point County Park is a local favorite known for its pebble beach, which is ideal for agate hunting and rock picking. The park features 31 campsites, some offering lake views.

Black River Harbor Recreation Area
Located east of Ironwood, Black River Harbor offers a relaxing setting with scenic waterfalls and access to Lake Superior. The harbor is a popular spot for boating, fishing, and hiking. The beach at Black River Harbor is a wide and long sandy beach stretching for miles down the Lake Superior coastline. This beach is the favorite if you want to experience sand, sun, and crisp waters.
Saxon Harbor
Just across the border in Wisconsin, Saxon Harbor is a short drive west from Ironwood and features a beautiful sand beach, perfect for swimming and sunbathing. It’s an excellent spot for kayaking, fishing, and enjoying a peaceful day by the water.

For those seeking adventure on the water, Ironwood’s surrounding lakes and rivers offer excellent opportunities for paddle boarding. The Black River scenic byway features five stunning waterfalls, including popular Rainbow Falls. Lake Superior’s shores are renowned for their unique rocks, including agates and Yooperlites, which are rocks that fluoresce under UV light. Little Girls Point is a prime location for rock enthusiasts to hunt for these, especially during the evening when the Yooperlites glow under a UV flashlight.
